A Tree Tribute for Our Coffins
In 1995 as part of our Tree Tribute initiative we pledged to plant a tree for every solid coffin sold and until recently this pledge was fulfilled via the Woodland Trust. This year we decided instead to plant over 800 sapling trees on a stretch of derelict woodland on a Northumberland farm that was in need of renovation.
Replacing the bracken with trees has obvious environmental benefits. The Sweet Chestnut we planted is sustainable and fast growing and often used in man made forestry as the wood can be cut in a sustainable way without the need for re planting. It can be used to make chipboard, or for wood fuel or biomass as it is now called. Tree planting can also help to provide healthy woodland habitats for a huge variety of plants, flowers, birds, mammals and insects.

As well as planting trees to help offset our carbon emissions, the majority of coffins we manufacture in our award winning factory are made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood. The ticked Oak Tree trademark used by the FSC is increasingly recognized as the definitive environmental standard for wood products.
The machinery we use in coffin manufacture uses a green electricity tariff. We also supply our own energy needs by using a biomass generator. This is fuelled by our left over wood cuts that would otherwise go to waste, saving landfill and carbon emissions.
